I’ve been getting a number of hits here at Savannah Unplugged from folks searching for info about SCAD’s annual New Alumni Concert in Forsyth Park. The event over the years has featured some stellar shows — Ziggy Marley, Michael Franti,…

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago at Spoleto USA 2014 — a review

First things first: if you ever go to some sort of cultural programming at the College of Charleston’s TD Arena, buy your tickets early and get as close to the stage as possible. A friend and I had a pretty…

This would be a brilliant rant about the state of the news media, but you won’t believe who said it

So I’ve made the title of this post sort of a joke. I’ve worded it just like so much of the “clickbait” that’s out there. That vague noun clause at the end — “who said it” — is the key.…

Cat attacks dog attacking little boy – video

The owners of this house probably might have gone overboard with security cameras, but look at the amazing footage they snagged of a neighbor’s dog randomly attacking their cute little son (I’m assuming the dog hated the sound of those…

As suburban poverty increases, what options do we have?

I’ve written off and on here about some of the challenges created by sprawl and by the suburbanization of so much of America over the last 60 years or so. One of the thorniest issues is transportation, and that issue…

Fire temporarily closes American Legion Post #135, Betty Bombers

As often as I’ve been to the lounge at the American Legion Post #135 over the years, you’d think I’d remember exactly when it became a hub of neighborhood activity. I live four blocks south of the Legion, and I…

U.S. economy added 288,000 jobs in April in latest estimates; unemployment rate plummets to 6.3%

Before we get too excited — or too worried — about today’s seemingly upbeat employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, you might want to take a look at this excellent analysis at the NYT’s The Upshot, which details…

Reminder: find coverage of Savannah music scene at hissing lawns

Well about 900 people now like the Savannah-based music blog hissing lawns on Facebook and over 200 people are following hissing lawns on Twitter. (hissing lawns takes its name from the great song and album by Joni Mitchell, The Hissing of Summer Lawns.)
I started the blog with a handful of other live music enthusiasts back in September, and we’re thrilled by how successful so far. I’m especially proud of the quality of hissing lawns’ photo galleries, featuring work by Tom Cartmel, Petee Worrell, Jon Waits, and me.

But we’d like to see the blog continue to grow. So if you’re interested in the Savannah music scene please check out the blog and take a second to follow on Twitter and/or on Facebook. Savannah is a pretty small media market, which makes driving traffic to a specialty blog pretty difficult. So sharing content would be much appreciated too. We’re also on the lookout for additional contributors.
Thanks,
Bill
