New home sales ticked up today, but you can see on the great graph here by Calculated Risk that sales also ticked up back at the end of 2009 and in spring of 2010 — just before the twin expiration dates of the homebuyer tax credit. And when I say “ticked up”, that’s what I mean: the policy was completely inadequate given the massive scale of the decline in new home sales.
I’ve written routinely about the inane ban on legal adults aged 18-20 from entering bars that offer live entertainment. Many cities across the state, including Statesboro and Athens, have simple systems for keeping 18-20 year olds from drinking: an X on each hand so that any drinking is obvious to bar staff.

I’m thrilled to hear that this mountain is headed back to The Jinx on December 1st, and I just hope they have the same kind of crowd that they had last time.
We probably won’t know which student-made bumpers will be played before screenings at the upcoming Savannah Film Festival until a week from now, but lots of links have been crossing my desk(top).
The great rock trio Les Racquet was hanging around Savannah for a while over the winter — playing gigs at the Tybee Island Social Club and at Live Wire. They first came through the area and quickly won some hardcore fans on their first trip last year.
Another Safe//Sound production at The Sparetime. These upstairs shows at the new-ish bar at the corner of Congress and MLK have drawn good audiences and intriguing acts that likely wouldn’t have stopped in Savannah at all in the past.
Dex Romweber put on a great show last night at Dollhouse Studios — a new venture in West Savannah. Romweber, formerly of Flat Duo Jets, now plays much of the time with his sister Sara, the drummer in the Dex Romweber Duo. Sara is a trip to watch as her long hair flies as she attacks the drums, but it’s Dex’s show — that deep voice is so compelling and crystal clear. He was sure on point last night.
I’m not getting into the relative merits of having additional government employees, but it’s a simple fact that governments at all levels have added employees as the nation’s population has increased — and those increases have generally been affected hardly at all by recessions. But this time is different.
