In my City Talk column today, I write about the magnificent and versatile new North Garden at the Ships of the Sea on MLK. The huge lot used to have a commercial building on it, which was later owner by SCAD. The college developed extensive renovation plans that were nixed by complaints from the Ships of the Sea, and then the building slowly deteriorated.
At the time, I was sorry to see that building go — especially considering the loss of other historic commercial buildings in that corridor.
But it’s sure hard to complain about what the Ships of the Sea, largely thanks to the late Mills B. Lane IV, has done there now.
