A new Mexican restaurant on Whitaker and a quick roundup of the Savannah restaurant scene

Click here for today’s City Talk column about Tequila’s Town Mexican Restaurant at 109 Whitaker Street in Savannah.

In the column I mention trying the Molcajete — you can see that dish below embedded from my Instagram account. (Yes, I occasionally post food pics there.)

The Savannah dining scene has been much in the news over the last couple of months with the controversies around Paula Deen, but we’ve also had a great year so far in terms of new restaurant openings and other developments, like the announcement of the inaugural Savannah Food and Wine Festival (more on that in an upcoming post).

In the last couple of months, I have also written about the snazzy new Chive Sea Bar & Lounge on Broughton Street and Oliva on Whitaker. I’ve had some good meals — especially the grilled pineapple salad and the tacos — at the new Blowin’ Smoke, although I find myself going primarily at odd times to avoid the crowds. The new Coffee Deli in Habersham Village has a great reuben — I’m eager to try other options. UPDATE: I forgot to mention Zunzis 2! It’s a great new sit-down spot with a full bar.

And I’ve had some really solid meals at a number of other spots around town this spring. I don’t make all that much money from my two jobs, but my house is paid off, I’m fairly frugal with many expenses, and food is one of my few indulgences.

Standout meals in recent weeks came from Leoci’s, from 22 Square (in the Andaz Hotel on Ellis Square), and from Vic’s on the River.

I also took a friend who is headed off to grad school for a lovely lunch at B. Matthew’s Eatery and had solid meals with a visiting family at Tubby’s in Thunderbolt, the Crystal Beer Parlor, and the Six Pence Pub.

And I’ve continued to eat pretty regularly at Betty Bomber’s, the fabulous retro diner inside the American Legion just south of Forsyth Park.

There are lots of good options out there, for those who have the money, the time, and the desire. I hope to start making more posts about restaurants here on this blog.
