One Sears, five Kmarts in Georgia slated for closure

Today Sears released the names of 79 Sears or Kmart stores that will be closed. Another 20 to 40 stores are expected to be added to this list.

According to the company, “a typical store that is being closed employs between 40 and 80 associates.” So we are not really talking here about massive layoffs. From an economic perspective, I’m more concerned about the sheer square footage of these stores and the prospects for finding new retailers or other uses for them.

No Savannah stores are on the list, which can be seen here, but the following Georgia stores are going to be closed:

Sears, Eisenhower Parkway, Macon
Kmart, Buford Highway, Buford
Kmart, Highway 5, Douglasville
Kmart, Cleveland Avenue, Atlanta
Kmart, Milgen Road, Columbus
Kmart, Tara Boulevard, Jonesboro

The closures are spread across the nation, but a quick glance at the list makes it seem like Florida will be the hardest hit state.
