Savannah Stopover preview: Stop Light Observations

This is another in a periodic series of previews of acts playing the 2013 Savannah Stopover.

Despite the facts that Stop Light Observations is based just up the road in Charleston and has over 17,600 fans on Facebook, I first listened to the band just a few weeks ago after they were announced for the Stopover.

How did I miss such a great sound for so long?

As noted on the SLO website, the band mixes and crosses genres in ways that are hard to define. So I won’t try to.

You can preview and buy Stop Light Observations’ 2012 demo album The Zoo on iTunes, and you can hear it all on this page of the band’s website.

Notice the rich layers here in “Search Into Your Soul” beginning with lead singer Will Blackburn’s intense, seductive voice.

This great video for “Circadian Rhythms” — a little poppier than some of the other tunes — also gives a sense of Stop Light Observations’ sound and sensibility. I like the catchy chorus. (There’s also quite literally a chorus of children at the end, by the way.)

Stop Light Observations will play the Congress Street Social Club at midnight on Friday, March 8 — a prime slot.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be posting quite a number of short previews like this. So far I’ve previewed Mac DeMarco, Little Tybee, Heyrocco, and of Montreal.
