I’m not quite sure where this news first appeared, but it appears to be Billboard with Omnivore, Rhino to Release ‘CBGB’ Soundtrack.

But the listing is a little clearer at Spin:

Spin’s article asks, Will the ‘CBGB’ Soundtrack Give ’70s American Punk Its ‘Big Chill’?

God I hope not.

If there’s one era that doesn’t need “Big Chill” sentimentalizing, it’s punk.So who’s missing?

There is one Joey Ramone track, but I don’t see The Ramones anywhere.

I know that The Shirts appear in the movie, but their sound wasn’t so much punk and they’ve largely faded from rock history.

And here again are a few photos that I took in July 2012 during CBGB shooting here in Savannah. These pics include Rupert Grint, Justin Bartha, Alan Rickman, and Donal Logue.

Rolling Stone: “CBGB” editing underway, but still questions about the soundtrack http://www.billdawers.com/2012/09/18/rolling-stone-cbgb-editing-underway-but-still-questions-about-the-soundtrack/ Tue, 18 Sep 2012 18:29:54 +0000 http://www.billdawers.com/?p=3729 Patti Smith's reaction to the film, I don't expect to hear any of her music, but what about the Ramones? What about Talking Heads? What about Blondie?]]> From Rolling Stone’s CBGB Film Finishes Shooting; Release Planned for 2013:

Relics from New York City’s bygone CBGB club – including “Smithsonian-quality pieces” like its bar, the phone booth, chunks of the walls and those stained toilets, all pulled from storage – will reunite on the big screen next year in CBGB, which indie filmmakers confirmed they finished shooting in August.

Forty years after CBGB opened its doors on the city’s Lower East Side, writer Jody Savin and director Randall Miller of Unclaimed Freight Productions tell Rolling Stone they are now editing the 100-minute feature. It tells the story of how the late Hilly Kristal [Alan Rickman] offered his club’s cramped stage to bands playing original songs, which attracted groups like the Ramones, the Patti Smith Group and Talking Heads. In 1974 Television became the first act to play CBGB, and gigged there every Sunday for years before recording their album Marquee Moon. The club closed in 2006.

Much of the film was shot in Savannah this past summer, as most people reading this already know. The Rolling Stone piece contains a number of details likely to be of interest to those who have followed the project.

But will the film feature the soundtrack that it really should? That’s a question that has been nagging those of us who hope CBGB is both a critical and commercial success.

From Rolling Stone:

Produced for less than $10 million, CBGB will feature more than 40 songs of the period, though Savin admits “the music decisions are not done yet,” because “some bands are more cooperative than others.”

40 songs = good
uncertainty about which songs = bad

The Dead Boys (l-r): Justin Bartha as Stiv Bators, Rupert Grint as Cheetah Chrome, Bronson Adams as Johnny Blitz

How many of the iconic songs will even be made available? And at what price?

The piece notes that the filmmakers have been consulting with both Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, so one could reasonably expect that Television songs might be in the final cut. Ditto for The Dead Boys, since Cheetah Chrome (played in the film by Rupert Grint) even had a brief role as a cab driver picking up Hilly Kristal’s mom (Estella Parsons). I’m betting songs by The Shirts will be available too — the film is a great chance to boost sales and visibility for some bands that have largely faded from public consciousness.

Given Patti Smith’s reaction to the film, I don’t expect to hear any of her music, but what about the Ramones? What about Talking Heads? What about Blondie?

Interviews with Malin Akerman, Ashley Greene, and Johnny Galecki on “CBGB” set in Savannah http://www.billdawers.com/2012/08/30/interviews-with-malin-akerman-ashley-greene-and-johnny-galecki-on-cbgb-set-in-savannah/ Thu, 30 Aug 2012 19:56:42 +0000 http://www.billdawers.com/?p=3628 CBGB; Ashley Greene, who plays Lisa Kristal, the daughter of club owner Hilly Kristal; and Johnny Galecki, who plays Terry Ork, whose Ork Records released singles by Television, Alex Chilton, The Feelies, and others. ]]> Check out this ET interview with Malin Ackerman, who plays Deborah Harry of Blondie in CBGB; Ashley Greene, who plays Lisa Kristal, the daughter of club owner Hilly Kristal; and Johnny Galecki, who plays Terry Ork, whose Ork Records released singles by Television, Alex Chilton, The Feelies, and others.

There’s a regrettably cloying soundtrack behind the video, and I’m a little surprised that Ackerman treats Deborah Harry and Blondie as absolute synonyms.

Still, there are a few images from the set that give a little sense of the look of the film.

From ET’s Malin Akerman Feels Pressure Playing Blondie

Fresh off of her musical role in Rock of Ages, Malin Akerman returns to back to the music scene in the upcoming film CBGB. However, this film is based on a true story, and she will play the role of punk rock pioneer Blondie, which pressures her to execute an accurate portrayal.

“There is so much pressure to do it right,” Akerman said. “I’ve been watching copious amounts of YouTube videos, interviews, and stage performances…There’s such a huge…population in the world who know who she is and who watched her, so you want to get it as right as possible. There is, obviously, pressure. You want to do her justice, so hopefully she’ll be happy.”

I guess my first question is this: how the heck did Gil Cruz of The Jinx get his photo taken with both Taylor Hawkins and Joel David Moore? (Click here for a post about The Jinx with lots of photos from the last year.)

I continue to be pleased and a little surprised by how willing some of the CBGB stars have been to put themselves in the public eye via their own and their fans’ Twitter feeds while in Savannah for filming.

Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters plays Iggy Pop. Joel David Moore plays Joey Ramone. Julian Acosta is Johnny Ramone. Malin Ackerman plays Debbie Harry. Mickey Sumner is Patti Smith. Stana Katic is Genya Ravan.

Nice shoutouts here to Eric Culberson and Catfish Staggs.

Can CBGB spirit be recreated — in Savannah or anywhere? http://www.billdawers.com/2012/06/03/can-cbgb-spirit-be-recreated-in-savannah-or-anywhere/ Sun, 03 Jun 2012 15:40:35 +0000 http://www.billdawers.com/?p=3020 CBGB, in which Alan Rickman stars as legendary club owner Hilly Kristal, I can't help wondering if the filmmakers can really capture the era. ]]> As Savannah gets ready for the filming of CBGB, with Alan Rickman as legendary club owner Hilly Kristal, I can’t help wondering if the filmmakers can really capture the era.

I sure hope so. I’m sure they’re working hard — and I’m sure they’ve been poring over images and videos like the ones I’ve embedded here.

It’s a daunting task not only to get the look right, but to capture the spirit and the vibe.

And things seem a little more complicated because of a family feud in the years since Kristal’s death. Check out the WSJ’s 2010 piece CBGB Holdings Slams Kristal Estate or last week’s piece in Spin: CBGB Film Cast Grows as Movie Draws Ire of NYC Club Owner’s Son. That more recent piece notes that Kristal’s ex-wife Karen will not be in the movie’s plot because of legal wrangling over the estate, movie rights, and screenplay authorship.

And there have also been some snarky comments about making the film in Savannah, like this one from a New York-based writer at Movieline:

We get some stuntbozo driving a sportscar into a Sbarro for Jerry Bruckheimer, and Savannah gets Malin Ã…kerman as Debbie Harry, Rupert Grint as Cheetah Chrome, Joel David Moore as Joey Ramone, and Alan Rickman in the aforementioned role of club proprietor Hilly Kristal, all reviving the dawn of punk and new wave in the edgy metropolis where the Girl Scouts were founded Hollywood honchos go to self-immolate.

Screenshot of Debbie Harry at CBGB

After all these years, do New Yorkers really think they still have a monopoly on New York?

Especially the New York of the 70s and 80s, which has gone the way of John Varvatos?

And if such conversations weren’t enough to keep CBGB the film simmering in the news, there’s the first ever CBGB Festival, scheduled for July 5-8.

Anyway, if you’re looking for more info on the cast of CBGB, click here.

Otherwise, stay here and check out a few videos from the club back in the day.
