Friday is going to be a serious night of rock and roll at The Jinx on Congress Street here in Savannah.

Cusses is the headliner — and they arguably have more momentum right now than any other Savannah band. The band recently had a great session on Daytrotter (click here for my post on that) and beat out several other videos to get into regular rotation on mtvU (click here).

Cusses routinely packs The Jinx, and this will be the last local show until May according to the Facebook invitation.

Whaleboat, who will be opening for Ponderosa and The Whigs at the 2013 Savannah Stopover, recently got a great write-up by The MusicFile and are releasing their new single “Socialist” on Friday.

Can’t Kids from Columbia, S.C., will be opening. Here’s a taste:

And here’s a video teaser from Whaleboat:

Good news for readers of Do — the entertainment pullout section on Thursdays in the Savannah Morning News: Kayne Lanahan and The MusicFile team (the folks behind Savannah Stopover) are going to be writing a couple of columns per month.

The inaugural piece: The MusicFile: Sorting out the top 10 Southern songs of 2012.

The top five are:
1.“Birmingham” by Shovels and Rope
2. “I Found You” by Alabama Shakes
3. “Numb” by Gary Clark Jr.
4. “Am I That Lonely Tonight” by Justin Townes Earle
5. “Gospel” by The Whigs

But you can click on through to the column for more on those and the rest of the top 10.

The MusicFile’s best new Savannah bands of 2012 (not all are truly brand new, but largely fresh to the scene):

Adam Intrator of Triathalon

Post updated, 10/5
No Control’s Mini Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 6th.

The fest will be at Southern Pine Company at 616 East 35th St., along East Broad Street. There’s much more info on the Facebook event invitation.

$10 at the door. Doors open at 4 p.m., with DJs first and bands starting at 5:30.

The folks with CUSSES are the main organizers. Thanks in advance to them for their efforts in organizing this!

It’s an intriguing lineup of short sets by local and out-of-town acts, with an emphasis on youth. There have been a couple of lineup changes:

  • 4-5:30: DJs
  • 5:30-6: Sauna Heat
  • 6:15-6:45: Perhaps
  • 7-7:30: Hot Plate
  • 7:45-8:15: Deep Search
  • 8:30-9: Whaleboat
  • 9:15-9:50: Cement Stars
  • 10:05-10:40: Cloudeater
  • 10:55-11:30: Heyrocco
  • 11:45-12:30: Triathalon

A few clips and images:

I was very impressed with Heyrocco at the last No Control Festival:

Triathalon on Broughton Street for Fashion’s Night Out Savannah 2012.

Triathalon is one of the best young bands I’ve heard in a long time:

Sauna Heat is a garage rock band fronted by Triathalon’s Michael Younker:

If you’re looking for an overview of Savannah’s Fashion’s Night Out on Thursday, September, 6-11 p.m., click here for my most recent Sunday City Talk column, click here for a Savannah Morning piece by Erin Ebert, or click here for Jessica Lebos in Connect Savannah.

I’m sure there will also be additional coverage in Do in the Savannah Morning News on Thursday.

Click here to go to the event homepage.

If you’re planning to spend much of Thursday night on Broughton Street, here’s a more detailed schedule with the lineup at the outdoor stages. Please note that the fashion shows at each end are staggered on the half hour; most should be quite short, affording plenty of time for wandering back and forth. That should help get foot traffic spread out along the street, although it might cut a bit into shopping time.

There is some great music booked for the event.

Also, note that the Savannah Skate Park organizers plan to have a quarter pipe at Bull and Broughton with a half dozen or so skaters all night. There will be plenty of information about the project too.

Montgomery and Broughton Stage (staging by Capital A):

  • 6 p.m.: DJ Will Rock (will play between band sets all night)
  • 7 p.m.: Triathalon
  • 7:30 p.m.: Fashion Show 1 featuring retailers Copper Penny, J Parker Ltd, J. Paige with Sara Jane Kids)
  • 8 p.m.: Triathalon
  • 8:30 p.m.: Fashion Show 2 featuring retailers Fab’rik, Go Fish, Civvies, Marc by Marc Jacobs
  • 9 p.m.: KidSyc@Brandywine
  • 10 p.m.: Finale Fashion Show w/KidSyc@Brandywine

Drayton and Broughton (staging by Kaufman-Heinz):

  • 6 p.m.: DJ D Frost (will play between band sets all night)
  • 7 p.m.: Fashion Show 1 featuring BleuBelle, Half Moon Outfitters, Trunk 13
  • 7:30 p.m.:  Whaleboat
  • 8 p.m.: Fashion Show 2 featuring Gap, Villa Savannah, Kathi Rich, Arc
  • 8:30 p.m.:  Whaleboat
  • 9:15 p.m.: CUSSES
  • 10 p.m.: Finale Fashion Show w/CUSSES

Here’s what that looks like at a glance:

FNO 2011 on Broughton Street

A few acknowledgements that have been sent my way:

  • The two Finale shows showcasing mixed looks from the retailers styled by Blake Olmstead-Mavrogeorgis and Alison Nanninga.
  • The 40 models are from the agencies Halo Models and Talent, RISE Model Management, and Tucker Model Talent.
  • Hair and Makeup teams led by Lindsay Nix of Towne Salon and Jules de Jesus of Dollface by Jules.
  • The Fashion’s Night Out Steering Committee includes Bree Thomas, Erin Wessling and Cecilia Russo. Mitchell Hall is handling many of the logistics. Summer Teal Simpson booked the music and DJs.
