The lineup for Lollapalooza, slated for August 2-4 in Chicago’s Grant Park, was released earlier today.

Headliners include The Cure, Mumford & Sons, The Killers, Nine Inch Nails, Phoenix, The Postal Service, Vampire Weekend, New Order, Queens of the Stone Age, The National, and The Lumineers.

There are a fair number of acts that have played Savannah in recent years, and it’s also worth noting that Baroness will be playing Lollapalooza. Baroness also announced a tour in May and June today. In a Stereogum interview, John Dyer Baizley talks about the band’s bus wreck in Bath, England last year. Baizley notes the inspiration that he found from the story of Savannah’s Jason Statts.

I thought it might be interesting on some level to see which Lollapalooza acts have played Savannah in recent years. Here’s the quick list I came up with:

  • Eric Church – Civic Center 2011
  • Band of Horses – Savannah Music Festival 2011
  • Charles Bradley – Savannah Music Festival 2013
  • St. Lucia – Savannah Stopover 2012
  • Shovels & Rope – multiple shows
  • Guards – Savannah Stopover 2012
  • The Bright Light Social Hour – Hang Fire for two shows in 2011
  • PUJOL- Savannah Stopover 2012 and 2013
  • Frontier Ruckus – Live Wire Music Hall 2012
  • Wheeler Brothers – Dub’s Pub produced by Live Wire Sounds in February 2013
  • The Dunwells – Savannah Stopover 2013

I don’t know if there are any lessons there for the Savannah music scene, but it’s sort of interesting.

Four months after crash, Baroness posts rehearsal video: “it’s time to get back to it” http://www.billdawers.com/2012/12/17/baroness-posts-rehearsal-video-its-time-to-get-back-to-it/ Mon, 17 Dec 2012 22:45:57 +0000 http://www.billdawers.com/?p=4460 an upbeat post by John Baizley on the band's website, Baroness is resurfacing after four months of recuperating after a motor coach crash in England.]]>
In August, the band Baroness was involved in a terrible motor coach crash in Bath, England while touring.

Now, according to an upbeat post by John Baizley on the band’s website, the band is resurfacing:

Simply put: it’s time to get back to it. Since my belated and thankful return to the USA (after our painful test in motorcoach-aeronautics) i can definitively say i’ve exhausted my reserve of potential leisure activities (there’s not that many of them, after all). in recent weeks, i’ve come dreadfully close to boredom, and in those moments i can’t help but focus on my glaring physical infirmities.

Baizley, who suffered several serious breaks in the crash, has a lot more to say in that post about the slow process toward full recovery. Still, I’m sure fans around the world — as well as their many old friends and family here in Savannah — will be heartened by today’s news.

Paste has already picked up Baizley’s post and posted the following video, a rehearsal session of the new song “Stretchmarker”.

Baizley is on the left; his bandmate Pete Adams is on the right:

The band members of Baroness and their crew are recovering from injuries sustained after their tour bus crashed outside of Bath, England early on Wednesday morning.

John Baizley has broken his left arm and left leg. Allen Blickle and Matt Maggioni each suffered fractured vertebrae. All three remain in the hospital as of this writing. Pete Adams has been treated and released from the hospital.

Three of the five crew members who were on the bus have also been treated and released. One member is still undergoing testing. The driver of the bus remains in critical condition.

Please stay tuned for further updates. Thank you for all the support during this extremely difficult time.

UPDATE, 8/20, ANOTHER MESSAGE AND PIC EMBEDDED FROM THE BARONESS FACEBOOK PAGE (hover over the pic or click “View on Facebook” to see the full message:

The bus was hired from a German company, as I understand it. As I noted in a post yesterday that includes video of the crash site, the bus was going through a driving rain in bath, came down a hill, failed to make the necessary right turn, left the roadway, and fell about 30 feet.

Baroness was founded in Savannah in 2003 and was touring Europe to promote their latest release, a double album Yellow & Green. Here’s a great video recently posted to the Baroness website via Guitar World:

Pete Adams was also featured recently in Fishing World about his love of fly fishing.

For those like me who want to show their support but don’t know what to do, I’m thinking this would be a good time to buy some merch

I posted earlier today about the bus crash involving Baroness, the popular and critically praised metal band that formed in Savannah in 2003, and there has been little news released to the public since then.

There were nine people on the bus. All were injured when the bus left the roadway during heavy rain and fell 30 feet at about 11:30 a.m. local time after coming down a steep hill and failing to execute a right turn. The two more seriously injured people on the German-registered bus were stuck in the wreckage for some time. Those two people, who have not yet been publicly identified, are being treated in Bristol. The other seven are in Bath.

All reports indicate that none of the injuries are life-threatening, however. I will share more information as it is made public.

Baroness was near the end of this European tour. There were scheduled to play a show in Southampton tonight at The Talking Heads as well as several shows in Germany this weekend. Those are obviously postponed.

Baroness was promoting their recent double album Yellow & Green.

My best to all for a speedy recovery.

Here’s the BBC report from the site of the crash:

Baroness bus involved in “serious accident” in England http://www.billdawers.com/2012/08/15/baroness-bus-involved-in-serious-accident-in-england/ Wed, 15 Aug 2012 16:23:17 +0000 http://www.billdawers.com/?p=3573 ]]> There are reports of injuries but no fatalities in the crash today near Bath of the bus for metal band Baroness, which was founded here in Savannah.

From Spin:

The members of alt-metallers Baroness were involved in a serious accident today when their bus fell 30 feet off a viaduct near Bath in the U.K., landing on its side, at about 11:30 am British Standard Time, the BBC reports. The band — whose latest release, Yellow & Green is a SPIN Essential we dubbed the “metal album of the year” — was headed from a show in Bristol to Southampton, where they were to play tonight. Firefighters released two passengers who were trapped on board — one was the driver, according to ITV, but it’s not clear whether the other was a band members or crew — who were immediately treated by first responders and brought to a hospital in Bristol. The other seven passengers, who were able to escape on their own, are also receiving medical attention at a hospital in Bath.

From Relapse Records via Pitchfork:

Baroness have been involved in a motor coach accident in the Bath area of England.

All band members and personnel on board are currently receiving medical treatment.

The band had performed in Bristol last night and were traveling to Southampton for a performance at Talking Heads this evening.

All remaining dates on the band’s European tour have been canceled. Additional details to come as more information is available.

I’ll post updates later today as additional information becomes available.

The Baroness website and Facebook page look like they will also be updated regularly.
