Dan Deacon has more than 33,000 fans on Facebook, but his web presence is a little hard to get a handle on. I hate to say it, but the best background on him can probably be found on Wikipedia.

This will be Deaconâ€s third visit to Savannah. He is currently supporting his new album America (Domino Records) that debuted on August 28th. America has been described by the New York Times as “a dark love letter of sorts to the country”. Rolling Stone states that “his music and sound-scapes depict the beauty and poetic nature of his homeland”.

With this new body of work, Deacon explores all dimensions of instrumentation, melding acoustic and synthetic tones, pop and classical scores, and experimenting with a host of players on a variety of instruments. In short, Deacon has honed his take on the sound of “America”, uniting disparate elements to create a cohesive message: “The future surrounds us. Let us begin”. Relevant to the recent election, Deaconâ€s visit to Savannah is very good timing indeed.

Sara is a trip to watch as her long hair flies as she attacks the drums, but it’s Dex’s show — that deep voice is so compelling and crystal clear. He was sure on point last night. Great set — I just wish he had played longer.

The Dex Romweber Duo was part of a bigger show at Dollhouse. But I missed the opening act Jackals and only stayed for a little bit of Tav Falco and the Panther Burns.

For those who don’t know Romweber, here’s the sound, although most of last night’s set was considerably more intense than this. So good:

The sound was superb for the Dex Romweber Duo, but there were some technical issues at the opening of the Tav Falco set, and Falco didn’t seem to be able to generate enough vocal volume to keep up with the levels on everything else. Plus the little bit of white lighting was replaced with more red, which has proven for me to be the worst possible color to get decent club photos.

In these pics you can get a little sense of the big Dollhouse space, which will soon be home to a full-fledged recording studio — more on that in a future post or column. The next-to-last shot is of the burlesque dancer who then sat down as the drummer for Tav Falco’s band, and there’s one shot there of Falco, which I desaturated quite a bit.

Tav Falco is a Southern provocateur grifting his audience with the ol†song and dance act before shuffling out the back door with a wink and a nod. His historico-musico revue, The Unapproachable Panther Burns, originated in 1979 at the nadir of Memphis†postmodern, post-Beale, post-Sun, post-Stax era, when the Mississippi River town had seemingly disappeared from the cultural map and shriveled into an obsolescent landmark. Only groups like the Dixie Flyers, Mud Boy and the Neutrons, Big Star and Panther Burns were intent to keep the fires burning with or without commercial success, and their contribution to experimental pop music, dirty rock ‘n roll and the blues revival have been incalculable.

Tav Falco has once again assembled his band Panther Burns for a tour that celebrates the re-release of his seminal underground masterpiece “Behind the Magnolia Curtain (Fat Possum Records). Originally released by the then-fledgling/now legendary Rough Trade in 1980, Magnolia Curtain is a celebration of the genesis of rock and roll retold in a deviant backwoods ballroom style that broached the avant-grade. The band included such luminaries as the late Alex Chilton and and the Tate County Marching Drum Band.

This years’ lineup includes Giovanna Pizzorno, an original member of the Memphis all-girl band the Hellcats, and off-and-on drummer for the Panther Burns since the mid Eighties, as well as Peter Mavrogeorgis (aka Peter Dark) and Michael Low, both collaborators with Tav since the early 90’s. An unapproachable and visionary formation steered by one of the truly original and romantic forces in American music
