With Johnny Mercer songs?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"e26b170012445c56d240655bdd03f7bf\" data-index=\"10\" style=\"float: right; margin:10px 0 10px 10px;\">\n<script async src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:300px;height:600px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5595881567027133\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"8268618372\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>I have a hard time seeing how this will work, but<em> Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil<\/em> is being turned into a musical planned for Broadway.<\/p>\n<p>From Michael Riedel at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/entertainment\/theater\/midnight_in_the_garden_of_musicals_mwnGlxCDETjJ3Iyfqqqp4K\" target=\"_blank\">New York Post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And now \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is coming to Broadway, where it will be produced by Anne Hamburger, founder of the acclaimed off-Broadway theater company En Garde Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Hamburger has hired Southern playwright Alfred Uhry (\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Driving Miss Daisy,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Last Night of Ballyhoo\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) to turn Berendt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s book into a stage musical.<\/p>\n<p>Uhry has just about completed a first draft.<\/p>\n<p>The musical numbers \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and this is an inspired touch \u00e2\u20ac\u201d will be plucked from the songbook of Savannah native Johnny Mercer.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Uhry and Hamburger had a private tour of the [Mercer-Williams] house last week.<\/p>\n<p>Their guide, Hamburger says, elaborated on \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the incident\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by adding: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It was an act of self-defense.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a great example of the underbelly of America,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Hamburger. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153There are the things that all of us do on the surface \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and then there are the things we do underneath.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Johnny Mercer once put it, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153When we played our charade . . . \u00e2\u20ac\u009d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So purely lyrical in their evoking of emotions without clear narrative lines, Mercer&#8217;s songs could somehow be used for the tragedy at the core of <em>Midnight<\/em>, but we&#8217;ll have to see how this works our . . . <\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: Btw, this news is a few months old, but I had missed it completely.<br \/>\n<div class=\"e26b170012445c56d240655bdd03f7bf\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5595881567027133\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"4374909701\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have a hard time seeing how this will work, but Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is being turned into a musical planned for Broadway.
