Some just want to make music, and sometimes that falls beyond the boundaries of definable formats. Enter American Aquarium. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The most generic thing to do is call it Americana or alt-country,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Aquarium frontman B.J. Barham. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That can encompass everything from folk music to pop-country. But we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re definitely not a pop-country band, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re definitely not anything I think Nashville would ever touch with a 20-foot pole. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re straight-edged enough.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s neither apologizing nor boasting with that comment, but merely understating the eclectic and energetic nature of their music. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great bit of much deserved attention for the hardworking band from Raleigh. But on the edge of what? Stardom, I hope, but B.J. and the guys seem to come to the edge of many precipices.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been a huge fan since first hearing them in 2009. I did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billdawers.com\/2011\/01\/08\/nights-of-love-and-loss-with-american-aquarium\/\" target=\"_blank\">a writeup<\/a> just over two years ago and last summer wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billdawers.com\/2012\/08\/25\/american-aquariums-new-album-burn-flicker-die-a-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">a review<\/a> of their latest album, <em>Burn.Flicker.Die.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are some other big fans of American Aquarium here in Savannah, but the bands shows don&#8217;t consistent pack the house here like they do in most other cities. <\/p>\n<p>The piece in Country Weekly comes right on top of the release a few days ago of American Aquarium&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daytrotter.com\/#!\/concert\/american-aquarium\/20056323-3738302\" target=\"_blank\">second Daytrotter session<\/a>. From Sean Moeller&#8217;s mini-essay that accompanies both those sessions: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The American landscape that the North Carolina band American Aquarium paints for us is similar to the one that the Drive-By Truckers can&#8217;t help but experience, just with fewer gothic figures. It&#8217;s a landscape that feels mostly southern and mostly old and worn down. It&#8217;s one that&#8217;s synonymous with the great American struggle. It has nothing to do with prosperity or any kind of nationalism, any kind of rosy pride. It has everything to do with taking what you can get, even if that&#8217;s so little that it hurts.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On Friday, <a href=\"http:\/\/americanaquarium.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Aquarium<\/a> headlined a gig at the 40+ year old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exitin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Exit\/In<\/a> in Nashville. The band will be spending the month of March in Texas, playing gigs across the state and at SXSW.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure and catch them if you have the chance.
