The owners of this house probably might have gone overboard with security cameras, but look at the amazing footage they snagged of a neighbor’s dog randomly attacking their cute little son (I’m assuming the dog hated the sound of those things as much as people do). And then, out of nowhere, the cat . . .

Amazing stuff. If you click on through to YouTube, you can see an explanation for why the mother seems to run away too.

This has been making the social media rounds and already has more than 9 million views. But if you haven’t seen it and like cats and/or dogs, it’s well worth a look. Too funny.

I’m sorry. I made the mistake of clicking on the Instagram hashtag #reindeer. This is just a small sampling.

So here’s my Georgia football question . . . http://www.billdawers.com/2013/09/04/so-heres-my-georgia-football-question/ Wed, 04 Sep 2013 04:56:10 +0000 http://www.billdawers.com/?p=6123 Read more →

OK, I’m not going to suddenly start blogging routinely about sports.

And I’ll admit that I’ve gotten less and less interested in college football in recent years because of the growing issues involving concussions and the shameful commodification of young players, including many who will likely never earn a penny from the risks they’re taking on the field.

But I still follow the game to a degree, and I did watch UGA’s sort of embarrassing loss to Clemson on Saturday night.

So here’s my question, which I haven’t really seen addressed anywhere: why was Georgia playing this game in the first place?

We know that Georgia under Mark Richt has had a relatively weak record against ranked opponents. We know that Georgia has a recent history of slow starts. We know that when this matchup was announced, Clemson was expected to have a very good team this year, likely in the top 10 in the pre-season polls.

We also know that the college football rankings put heavy weight on any loss, including those in close games early in the season.

So while other top teams were racking up pretty straightforward opening week victories against respectable but clearly overmatched opponents, Georgia was playing on the road, at night, in a frenetic atmosphere, in a non-conference game, and against a top-10 opponent with one of the college game’s most skilled quarterbacks and a hurry-up offense that would give any team fits.

Now, no matter what Georgia does from here, they’ve marooned themselves several spots further down in the rankings than they would have been with an opening week W.

So why play Clemson on the road in week one? Was it just about the money that ABC was offering? Or machismo? Or hubris?

With a tough schedule the next few weeks, it’s quite likely that Georgia’s record will be 2-2 soon. That record will make it virtually impossible to win a national championship, which this team clearly is (or was) capable of doing.

So, really, why even schedule that game?

While I’m complaining, let me also complain about all the UGA partisans who keep saying how happy they are that the offense scored 35 points.

Well, 21 of those points were in the 1st half (14 in the first quarter), and 7 of those points came on a final drive for which Clemson was effectively playing prevent defense. It seems to be lost on most fans and commentators, but since Georgia had no timeouts left, Clemson was satisfied to give up that final touchdown since they also ran over one minute off the clock.

Almost half of UGA’s total yards were on drives that started in the first quarter.

Incredible 911 audio from Atlanta: bookkeeper Antoinette Tuff calms gunman http://www.billdawers.com/2013/08/22/incredible-911-audio-from-atlanta-bookkeeper-antoinette-tuff-calms-gunman/ Thu, 22 Aug 2013 21:33:09 +0000 http://www.billdawers.com/?p=6092 Read more →

Several of my friends on Facebook shared this audio today, so I knew it must be worth a listen.

And, wow.

Bookkeeper Antoinette Tuff was in the office when Michael Brandon Hill entered Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Atlanta Decatur Tuesday. And then she ended up talking to him for about an hour, according to the AJC’s She faced down the suspect.

That headline suggests some sort of contest of wills between Hill and Tuff, but the audio itself gives a very different impression. Tuff identified with the intruder and even shared some tough moments in her own life — her husband leaving her, a subsequent suicide attempt, having a son with multiple handicaps.

As it becomes clear that Hill is ready to give himself up, she even offers to walk out of the school with him. Eventually, they decide that he will disarm himself and the police will enter.

There’s some dead air in the opening moments here, and if you don’t want to listen to the whole recording, skip ahead to the 13:30 minute mark.

Talk about grace under pressure. The audio is embedded via the AJC piece linked above:

It’s also worth noting the efficiency and calm of the 911 dispatcher, whose name I have not seen.

This is pretty powerful stuff. Barbara Garcia’s restrained emotions are really something here. It’s also worth noting that the cameraman keeps filming rather than helping Garcia get Bowzy out from under the debris. Both Garcia and Bowzy appear to be physically OK.

Watch OCEARCH tag Lydia, a 14.5′, 2,000 lb. great white shark off Jacksonville coast http://www.billdawers.com/2013/03/13/watch-ocearch-tag-lydia-a-14-5-2000-lb-great-white-shark-off-jacksonville-coast/ Thu, 14 Mar 2013 02:20:01 +0000 http://www.billdawers.com/?p=5199 Read more →

I’ve posted several times about OCEARCH‘s tracking of great white sharks around the world — including along the East Coast of the U.S. One night, a 16.5 foot, 3,500 lb. great white named Mary Lee even turned up in the surf just off Jacksonville Beach.

Most recently, OCEARCH tagged Lydia off the Florida coast as part of Expedition Jacksonville, which has been chronicled on the organization’s Facebook page.

You can follow the action at OCEARCH’s Global Shark Tracker.

And researchers have now posted this gripping, not-for-the-squeamish video of the tagging of Lydia. Of necessity, catching, tagging, and releasing a massive great white shark is kind of a brutal process. I guess we can assume from the ongoing pinging of the tagged fish that the process does no lasting damage.
