I haven’t been into downtown Savannah today to check out the new Anthropologie store at the corner of Congress Street and Montgomery Street on Franklin Square in the space last occupied by 606 East Cafe (a decade ago!), but the store is open until 9 p.m. tonight according to the corporate website.

If you click through to that link, you’ll see the obvious lack of individual attention that a new chain store sometimes gets: the store location says that it is in Yamacraw Village.

But Anthropologie has some other ways of reaching customers and fans that are pretty darn effective.

For example, they have just over half a million followers on Instagram, and you can see that this pic from a few days ago got over 18,000 “likes” and was no doubt seen by tens of thousands more.

And this iconic shot did even better:

Anthropologie appears poised to open on November 29th at the corner of Congress and Montgomery streets on Ellis Square in Savannah.

From a Twitter exchange a little while ago:

I know, I know, some of you object to more chains moving into downtown, but Anthropologie is going to be occupying a space that has been vacant since 606 moved out over a decade ago. It’s a key corner too — with Marc Jacobs, other national retailers, and some excellent locally owned stores around the corner on Broughton Street, with City Market a stone’s throw away, and the bustle of Congress Street restaurants and bars in either direction.

A Black Friday opening will be a huge boost to the entire downtown shopping season.

Anyone who has been downtown lately at night has possibly noticed something we haven’t seen in a long, long time: lights on at the southeast corner of Congress and Montgomery streets.

The old site of 606 Cafe has been undergoing some rapid changes as renovations have moved ahed in recent months.

And the pace has picked up considerably. Apparently, Anthropologie is hoping to open in time for holiday shopping.

According to the store locator on the company’s website, Savannah’s new Anthropologie is “opening November.”

If you’ve seen these corporate chains get their act in swing when they approach opening, it’s pretty easy to see how quickly the space can be transformed from this point forward.

Here’s a shot through the window that I took last night:

The rumors of Anthropologie opening a store in Savannah have started circulating again.

But this time they’re not just rumors.

The fashion and lifestyle retailer has been mentioned repeatedly as a possible tenant for some large spaces in downtown Savannah, but nothing ever seemed to come of all the talk.

Now, before I continue, let me say that there has been no official confirmation of a signed lease or anything else. I have no inside knowledge. Major commercial deals and developments fall through all the time.

But take a look at the February 13 agenda for the Historic District Board of Review. From that document:

The sign reads: “ANTHROPOLOGIE” in eight inch (8”) high one-quarter (1/4”) thick HRS (steel) letters.

The site is 38 Montgomery St., but most longtime Savannahians will remember the big building at the corner of Montgomery and Congress as once home to 606.

From a January article by Savannah Morning News reporter Adam Van Brimmer:

The vacant lot once home to the courtyard dining area of the former 606 East Café on West Congress Street could soon feature a three-story commercial building.

The Savannah Historic Board of Review granted the first of two necessary approvals for the proposed building.

The property owner, Bob Turner, told the board a national retailer has committed to lease two floors of the new structure as well as that of the adjacent building on the corner of Congress and Montgomery streets.

And take a look at this photo from that HRB agenda:

If and when the deal is confirmed, I’ll certainly have more to say in a column or blog post.
