this mountain, from Johnson City, Tennessee
With an indie rock sensibility, gorgeous harmonies, and an intense combination of strings -- including banjo, cello, and electric guitar -- this mountain resists any easy categorization.

I've obviously been posting a lot lately about the Savannah Stopover, which runs from March 7 to 9, but the Savannah Music Festival begins in about three weeks. (March in Savannah is amazing and exhausting.) One of the Savannah Music Festival's most anticipated gigs is the performance by Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, with the stellar Richard Thompson opening. Harris and Crowell are now out promoting their new album Old Yellow Moon.

Fired CEO of Groupon: “If Groupon was Battletoads, it would be like I made it all the way to the Terra Tubes without dying on my first ever play through.”

Here’s Andrew Mason’s refreshing and funny note to Groupon employees after the board dismissed him as CEO: (This is for Groupon employees, but I’m posting it publicly since it will leak anyway) People of Groupon, After four and a half intense and wonderful years as CEO of Groupon, I’ve decided that I’d like [...]

Savannah Stopover preview: Roadkill Ghost Choir

By bill dawers On February 28, 2013 · in Music

Roadkill Ghost Choir’s music isn’t as dark and strange as the band’s name, but on multiple listens I’ve been almost transfixed by the gritty, southernishness to the rock and roll, combined with some almost ethereal flourishes. The band from Deland Florida seems poised for a big spring and summer, with the Savannah Stopover, SXSW, and [...]

The Savannah Stopover's focus is on touring indie rockers headed to SXSW in Austin the following weekend, but there's a good dose of local music too, from a variety of genres. Among this year's local acts is Eric Britt, whose thoughtful, passionate album Greener was released last fall. In Greener pastures for Eric Britt, Connect Savannah's Bill DeYoung wrote in part:

As I’ve noted recently, you’ll need a $5 wristband to drink out of to-go cups (unless you’re a smoker outside a particular establishment) in the designated festival area anytime on Friday, March 15 or after 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 16. Savannah’s parade this year is on March 16 — a typical move [...]

A few thoughts on the Oscars, Seth MacFarlane, and The Onion

By bill dawers On February 26, 2013 · in Arts & Culture

I normally don’t pay much attention to the Oscars, and I certainly had not seen most of this year’s nominated films, so I didn’t have much stake in Sunday night’s ceremony. I’m so out of step with the times that I even had to look up who Seth MacFarlane was. If I had [...]

From the Miami Herald a few days ago, Florida Gov. Rick Scott supports Medicaid expansion: Gov. Rick Scott said Wednesday he supports expanding Medicaid and funneling billions of federal dollars to Florida, a significant policy reversal that could bring health care coverage to 1 million additional Floridians. “While the federal government is committed to [...]

What should Savannah name our bridge across the river?

Without belaboring it, I fully concur with those who want to rename the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge. I have little to add to these paragraphs from a guest editorial by the Georgia Historical Society’s Stan Deaton in the Savannah Morning News two weeks ago: From time to time, Savannahians discuss renaming the Eugene [...]

Pew Research Center: “Little support for cutting” federal programs

By bill dawers On February 23, 2013 · in Economics

More on a theme I’ve been writing about regularly. While Americans say that they want to cut government spending generally, Americans — by considerable margins — oppose cuts to specific programs. From the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, As Sequester Deadline Looms, Little Support for Cutting Most Programs: For 18 [...]
