Believe me, there are tons of downtown Savannah residents and businesses who’d LOVE to see St. Patrick’s Day come to an end. I’d also disagree with a premise that you seem to be making: no matter whether Savannah is benefitting financially or not, it is not acceptable that visitors at St. Patrick’s Day leave tons of trash on the streets, in the squares, everywhere.

I agree with you about the lack of accountability regarding Orange Crush, and — as I say clearly in the post — I think there’s valid if tricky argument for demanding that it be a permitted event subject to various codes and requirements.

But it’s a simple fact that Orange Crush has been coming to Tybee and probably will keep coming to Tybee, so the city needs to figure out some ways to avoid PR nightmares like this in the future — and to maximize revenues while minimizing problems.

The St. Patrick’s day celebration brings millions of dollars to the area. It is a yearly event that the city and business owners put together. Orange Crush is an event put together by who? A twitter account? No one knows who put this event together. And more importantly no one will take responsibility for it. So this is an event that takes place on a public beach. With people bringing their own food and beverages. Then leaving those items on the beach for others to pick up is not the same thing. Businesses on Tybee did not benefit from Orange Crush. Ask the business owners on Tybee if they would like Orange Crush to continue or end. I’m sure the overwhelming majority would like it to end. Ask the business owners in Savannah and Tybee if they would like to the St. Patrick’s Day celebration to continue or end. I’m sure we all know the answer to that question. This isn’t a matter of race or racism. Its a fact that peoples homes, businesses, and environment are being abused by people that don’t live there. The citizens of Tybee should have the right to vote on whether or not this event should continue. The issue of race only clouds the truth of the matter.
