A recent post — What Smaller Government Looks Like in the US — included the following chart:
As you can see, the federal defense sector has added jobs over the last two years, but other federal, state, and local categories of employment have fallen rather dramatically. Local governments now employ approximately 250,000 470,000 fewer Americans than they did two years ago. More than half of those job losses have been in education.
