Armstrong Atlantic State University’s men’s and women’s tennis teams are two of the best-kept secrets in Savannah. The women have won three consecutive NCAA DII championships, while the men won in 2008 and 2009. Both have solid chances of winning in 2011.
If they’re not looking too far past their opponents on Tuesday, May 3rd, both should advance to the round of 16. The men play Flagler at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the great tennis complex in Bacon Park (off Skidaway Road between Derenne and Eisenhower); the women will also face Flagler in a match at 2 p.m.
I’ve taught a number of Armstrong tennis players over the years — many are international students with incredible drives and work ethics, in addition to being nice people. I took my camera along to a match not long ago and got a few decent pics. If you’ve never used one of these galleries, try clicking the bottom right corner to go full screen. It would be great to see some Savannah tennis lovers out at Bacon Park on Tuesday.
