Solid opening weekend for “The Conspirator”

A few previous posts about The Conspirator: my review, one roundup of reviews, and another slightly more positive roundup of reviews.

In its opening weekend, the Robert Redford directed film finished 9th at the box office and is estimated to have made “roughly $4 million” according to the Hollywood Reporter:

The third new film of the frame [3rd new film of the week], Roadside Attractions’ historical drama The Conspirator, from director Robert Redford and going out in only 706 locations, performed as hoped for in grossing $3.9 million–the top opening gross ever for Roadside.

Starring Robin Wright and James McAvoy, The Conspirator came in No. 10. A vast majority of those going to see the film were over the age of 40.

“We are very pleased with The Conspirator opening. Grosses went up 44% Friday-to-Saturday, indicating good word of mouth, and we had reports of sellouts, especially matinees, across the country. We successfully motivated our heavily 35+ audience to come out opening weekend, not always easy to do,” Roadside co-president Howard Cohen said.

According to Box Office Mojo
, the per theater average of $5,550 was considerably better than every other film in the top ten besides the leaders Rio and Scream 4, both of which also debuted this week and came in #1 and #2.

I gather that The Conspirator will be on 300 additional screens next week, so the stage is set for some solid numbers. Maybe that will spur the American Film Company to move ahead more quickly with films in development about Paul Revere and John Brown.
