Spoleto 2011 season announced, tickets on sale

Spoleto USA’s 2011 lineup was announced on the web earlier today. As usual, the famed Charleston festival presents a variety of art forms over its 18 day run.

Spoleto obviously brings some incredible richness to the southeast coast each year, but it’s worth noting that at least four of this year’s musical acts (Sarah Jarosz, Del McCoury, Dianne Reeves, and Bela Fleck) have also appeared in recent years at the Savannah Music Festival. (Granted, this year’s Spoleto reunites Fleck with the original Flecktones, while the 2011 SMF has Fleck performing in a one-time-only show with jazz pianist Marcus Roberts. Reeves also returns to the SMF this year.)

While Spoleto’s musical offerings seem a predictable if wonderful mix, it’s hard not to be impressed by the great variety of theater, opera, and dance. I’ve already snapped up tickets to Kneehigh Theatre’s dark take on “The Red Shoes,” which was reviewed glowingly in the NYT recently. That same day I’ll see “13 Most Beautiful” — a relatively short show of songs commissioned to accompany some of Andy Warhol’s screen tests.
